In 2006, the FBI recorded 145 murders in Oakland, California. Teenagers spoke candidly about how easily they could purchase a gun. The murder of Tanya McCall, 40, on March 11, 2007, by her estranged husband in the parking lot of her church, witnessed by several other parishioners emphasized the loss of safety and community Oakland residents deal with to this day due to gun violence. McCall's funeral a testimony to the way in which spirituality plays a major role in how the community deals with loss and grief. The third photo shows men, right hands raised, promising to never promote violence within their community. An ongoing project, these photos are documents of the issues of violence, which are still intensely present in Oakland.
