| In a field in East Palo Alto a community of citizens live in tents, makeshift shacks and some even in caves dug out of the hills. Each person comes with their own story for making home in such a place - substance abuse, unemployment, mental illness or simply bad luck. They ask for very little, but with record breaking cold nights and an extremely rainy season, a small group of community humanitarians are seeking to relieve some of the challenges of living vulnerably. Project WeHope, co-directed by Pastor Paul Bains, Pastor Mary Frasier and Ysedra Mustiful, is committed to giving the cold a place to be warm and to those seeking answers or a second chance the resources and community. This essay is a look at some of the faces in need and the people who want to help. Published in the Palo Alto Weekly, March 2009 | | | |
